Folkestone in Stitches. The purpose of these workshops is to demonstrate that art can be done and enjoyed by everyone. A historical walk starting in Sandgate Road, going through town centre, down Tontine Street finishing at The Urban Room where the workshop will take place. The purpose of the walk is to look at 21 different venues/shops over the years that were involved in cloth, tailoring, and fashion in Folkestone. We will look at the changes that have taken place and at what the venues are today. Participants will be encouraged to take photographs. At the end of the walk we will arrive at The Urban Room for a short break before stating the workshop.

Participants will then be encouraged to choose one of their photographs as inspiration to draw with threads or to choose one of the copy of old photographs provided and use simple colourful embroidery to embellish the picture or even give a different message.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be encouraged to leave their piece of art with their details so they can be exhibited in the venue for the duration of the festival and collected at the end.

Sessions will need to be booked in advance. No more than 10 people at each session and no one younger than 12 years old Sessions will be free but donations of £5 recommended.

Marie-Hélène Hunter started working as an artist after moving to Folkestone in 2018 as previously, her career and family took most of my time. Marie-Hélène has always worked in several mediums and experimented with drawing and painting but mostly she focussed on embroidery, which always seems to come out as she preferred way of releasing stress. Marie-Hélène has been fortunate to work in different parts of the world where she could find inspiration in local art and culture. She enjoys all types of textiles and embroidery and finds ways of introducing glass beads in most pieces of work however, abstract embroidery appeals to her most as it combines the linearity of drawing with the colours and textures of painting. Everything about the process of working out stitches with needles and threads feels right. Marie-Hélène is a member of Folkestone Art Society (FAS) and Ashford Visual Artists (AVA) and took part in various exhibitions with FSA and AVA as well as taking part in South East Open Studios for the last couple of years.
